The Concept Of Education And Education - 1011 Words

The Concept of Education One of the most influential and dynamic sets of laws in the modern world is the set of laws governing education. Part of the reason education law is so dynamic is because of the varying opinions of the majority on what exactly education entails. It is incredibly influential because education affects every person on a day-to-day level; a good education can lead a person to great wealth, or happiness. A poor one can lead a person to abject failure, or perhaps strained subsistence. The most important thing to remember is that education is multifaceted - we are teachers, mentors, students, and leaders at different moments in our lives. The concept of education is a source of constant controversy. Questions like, when†¦show more content†¦This disparity in teaching styles has a direct consequence on the world around us. There is an inequality in education. Education that is poorly managed follow a person throughout their entire lives, it can lead to dogma tic pursuits of ill-formed plans, or hasty decisions made with an incomplete picture of the matter. Education is meant to combat this very idea, and a well managed education does just that: it creates an environment wherein people know precisely how complete a picture is and the steps they need to take to try and fill in the rest of the picture. An educated person will understand when it is necessary to act on an incomplete picture and when to wait and seek more information. Patience, discipline and curiosity are side effects of a good education, a scholarly person is used to having to work long and hard hours to fully understand a concept. These attributes will help a person throughout the rest of their lives, and likely lead them to pursuing something that will make them happy, rich, or hopefully both. A much harder question to answer than what exactly should education entail, is what makes for a well-managed education? What are the factors involved in that? To answer these questi ons, return to the multiple aspects of

Benefits of Two Years Mandatory Military Service Free Essays

With the present constant threat to national security and the many advantages that military service imparts to the individual, I take the position that every able-bodied citizen (male and female) should have a two-year military service. The first advantage of military service is that it pushes a man to develop personal discipline. In American society today, many youths were not able to develop any personal discipline (Armstrong, 2006). We will write a custom essay sample on Benefits of Two Years Mandatory Military Service or any similar topic only for you Order Now People who are undisciplined are usually the cause of trouble and more likely to commit many criminal offenses. That is because, people like them do not know how to take care of themselves and their society. They are lazy and just want to hang out in the streets and having nothing else to do, get themselves into drugs or other illegal activities. They are usually the ones who cannot find jobs or were constantly got fired.   In the end, they became a menace to society.   In reality, parents of this youths often cannot make them reform. Requiring this kind of people to enter military service for two years is the best means   for them to develop personal discipline, whether they like it or not. In military, failure to obey commands or follow rules means facing the corresponding military consequences. As I came from a military family (my dad, mom and step mom and three uncles are working in the military), I can attests that people from this service are well-disciplined individuals. Next, military service helps to â€Å"structure† a youth’s life. Most youths after high school will still be confused or unsure of what career to take in life. The underlying cause may be because they do not know themselves very well yet. They still do not know their strengths, weaknesses and what they really want in life. In short, their life still lacks â€Å"structure† from which to build a foundation. Having no compulsory military service to look forward to, these youths may waste their time with unnecessary experimentations, doing drugs or getting into close intimate relationships resulting to unwanted pregnancies (Armstrong, 2006). Mandatory military service will help these youths think of their options in life. In the military camps and training grounds, they will come to know their weaknesses, fears as well as strengths and the skill how to handle them. Free educational opportunities will also help them to get better acquainted with their interest and provide direction to their civilian life later on. Entering military service includes teaching     combat skills and survival methods (Armstrong, 2006).   The individual will come to know how to protect himself or others in danger. When he become a civilian later on, these skills will be helpful to ward off rapist, gang assaults, and other personal emergencies. He will also develop the skills how to be alert, to be able to detect suspicious activities around him. This is especially helpful in stopping or intercepting terrorist activities that is now constantly threatening the country. The military and the police had always wanted the civilian to cooperate and be on the alert regarding terrorism but most often than not the citizens were not of a much help due their ignorance or incapability. The best benefit of military service are the many lessons it will impart to the individual that may take a longer time to be learned   if he is   not in the military. He will get to have the chance to travel to many places and meet many kinds of people. He will learn independence, courage, self-determination, loyalty, responsibility and attention to details. Many men in history, US presidents specifically, made the right decisions because of the lessons they learned in the frontlines. For example, George Washington as a general knew the seriousness of the threat of British invasion, so that as a President in spite of much opposition to his decision he signed an unpopular treaty that prevented the British from ever successfully invading the country. Andrew Jackson was a major general who fought against the mighty British Army, and when he won, it had given him the courage to face other personal and political foes of his life. And lastly ( although there are still others), John F. Kennedy, as a lieutenant had acquired the ability to pay attention to details and how one slight mistake can cause larger problems .This attitude had helped him   make better decision during the Cuban missile crisis( Kliff, 2008). Many feared that to enlist in military service is to make an     early appointment with death. However, it must be understood that many men, young and old, died outside of military service. Their deaths were often due to lack of personal discipline. In fact, whatever disadvantage a man may think about military service, the advantages outweighs the disadvantages. Take for example the lessons he learned in two years in the frontlines. These briefly learned lessons will guide him throughout the many years of civilian life ahead of him. The conscript will become a better mother or father later on.   Aside from that, if military service is mandatory, the military will benefit because they will have many members who will protect the country and the millions of money originally allocated for recruitment will be channeled for training. The country, on the other hand, will benefit because its citizens will be well disciplined, mature, and able to defend themselves (Armstrong, 2006). Guidance and Counselling Networks †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Guidance and Counselling Networks. Answer: Introduction: If we observe minutely in our society, leadership is everywhere. Personally, I view leadership as being about genuineness and personality (Fairholm, 2009). Leadership is all about straining to change something and perfecting it than it was. After that change has worked with responsibility, that thing acquires admiration. Leadership is everywhere; in offices, in institutions, at our homes and many more. A great leader is a self-driven individual who assists voluntarily. By assisting my own brother with his school studies, I am exposing leadership quality. There are good leadership qualities which include; giving back of feedback in a responsible way, meeting with others to discuss, creating roles and working with patients in groups. During group works, that is when students acquire knowhow of social and being a responsible person, feelings for different personalities and other cultures, and also understands how group efforts can be influenced by leadership character (Kolzow, 2014). As I was relaxing at home trying to think of great leaders, I happened to see my mother busy with home chores. I found in her a great leader after observing her for some minutes. My mother never losing sight of the vision she had for her children is what I thought to myself, providing a secure atmosphere where her own kids could grow in prosperity. Mothers can be seen as busy in various house activities, looking for supplies today for planning required by their kids tomorrow, and on top of that, examining the demands to structure their professional lives. However, despite the many demands, mothers never forget about the visions of their children. Organizational Leadership. In the business world similarly, there is various demands that are made for considering a leader. The same way our moms showed us, however, these should not throw away our focus from what is important or needed for our businesses to grow and prosper. Patience is required for a good leader in making of a desired conclusion. Tolerance is one of the qualities which we all identify about our mothers. Raising of a child cannot be compared to a text book situation the same because there is something that will show up on the way and destroy the already laid plans (Rosn, 2014). Mostly, it is always as a result of the child not doing what they are instructed; sometimes it can be as a result of a kid getting sick on the day that you have tight schedules at the job. But in whatever the case, mothers have learnt how to deal with the above situations since they are aware that their hard work will one day be recompensed. It is of no effort to show little interest or patience in a hard job that requires long term philosophies when businesses concentrate repeatedly on gathering periodical forecasts (Nanjundeswaraswamy T. S, 2014). However, the same way mothers act so nice via their tasks, best things comes to patient people. A leader who is good motivates his/her team to always rely on themselves. Mothers also happen to be experts in motivating their kids to be always self-reliant when they are growing up. An individual requires learning by observing how our moms work; from taking care of their childrens clothes to asking their children to tidy up their rooms. One should be fascinated by the will in mothers to see how their kids take up the jobs that used to be done earlier by their children as they grew up into responsible adults. Being a mother is not an easy task that a person can imagine about as being an important role to gain an insight on how to lead or instruct others (Rosn, 2014). It was seen that a relationship between a mother and her child is completely different from that of an employee and his/her employer. In addition, the relationship with our mothers helps us to understand our life course. It is from our mothers that we can observe the value in us and help us in moving towards our roles as leaders in our various organizations. Emotional and Moral Intelligence. Emotional intelligence is one of the most important aspects. Emotional intelligence in our scenario here plays a great role in our lives. The leader of a team in an organization or in a certain project is expected to be productive regardless of the challenges he/she is facing when trying to lead the team to be successful. This kind of perception is important since it tries to describe the human interactions that we face in day to day life. Cooperation with people surrounding you is important regardless of who you are or what you do. People must work as a team, they must request for help and most importantly guide other human beings. The above responsibilities can only be done with the knowledge of the human feelings (Nyknen, 2011). It is the above situation that I deal with when relating with my colleagues, friends and also family. My belief to best communicate to the concept is comparing it with how I used to connect with others when I was in primary school up to date. I used to fin d it very difficult to communicate with older people when I was a kid because I didnt have a clue on how to tackle them. However, nowadays I can freely talk to everyone. In order to enhance organization/business performance and leadership success, moral intelligence is one of the important aspects to consider from any leaders point of view. At the beginning we studied about Emotional intelligence, then came Moral Intelligence. Moral Intelligence can be defined as the ability to clearly differentiate right and wrong. One of my friends was telling me about his employer and said that his employer wanted to construct a duped work place where he could get good moral Intelligence through tutoring work force to follow his humane principle examples. The boss usually tells his employees to stop mere justifications after ignoring deadlines or for not coming to the workplace on time and other activities influencing the workplace negatively (Kelman, 2016). My friends boss insists that each employee should care for each other with admiration and kindness. He also reminds the employees that everyone does wrong and not to be shallow minded of one anothers shortcomi ngs. Trust is required to the flourishing of any teamwork. Each member of the team must prove that he/she can be trusted; grow their trust via performance and communication skills, and also work hard to keep that trust. Each member should strive to believe in his/her team members in order to set a promise to their team and its major aims, invest their skills in the team with those objectives in their mind and feel free to talk about the issues that could be influencing their team (Nanjundeswaraswamy T. S, 2014). A quiet and tranquil atmosphere of the team allows members to share data and create a strong bond within the team members. A good example is my football team that massively relied on teamwork. The match had started and the opponent team managed to score a goal. Adam and Cole started blaming each other for the scored goal and we lost the match as a result. We managed to organize a rematch against the same team after a month and did my best to explain to Adam and Cole that if they c ooperated and work together, we could win the match. Luckily, they adhered to my advice and when the game started; they cooperated and we emerged as victorious. From my own perception, in every personality of any leader, ethics must play the major role. Agreeing to the main goal of any organization is try to prove that in a situational type of leadership is not being manipulated. Professional team members should try to comprehend that being told to do something is not being manipulated for it leads to a company being more progressive and successful. In short, in an organizational situation, a professional member should at no any time think as being manipulated (Bolden, 2010). A professional should try to measure and try to know how relative it is to the vision and the mission statement of the company. A team member should not take anything personal and try to look at the bigger picture. This reminds me of subject in last week which was emotional intelligence and how it could help differentiate between manipulation and situational leadership. This can consistently lead to achieving the best only and the potential plans for the company (Kelman , 2016). A good example of situational leadership is that of surgeons inside an operation theatre. When surgeons are inside an operation theatre particularly dealing with crucial operations and emergency cases, that is what we term as situational leadership. When a doctor is leading his/her fellow doctors in a theatre of operation, he/she is referred to a specialist in surgery. However, in case of situation that is urgent calling or during the operational issues, surgeons are required to make instant decisions regarding the state of the patient. The most fascinating fact about situational leaders is their ability to bend with the situation that is already at hand. Recently, people came to know that bullying in workplaces have been going on for many years. However, Anti-bullying movements existed in the United states from early as 1990s which implies that many workers have since been bullied all along. Workplace bullying can be defined as the repeated unfavourable and unethical treatment of a person by another in a workplace. This involves behaviour meant to belittle others through humiliation, rudeness, sarcasm, overworking an employee, threats and violence (Kolzow, 2014). The big question that arises is: Who in a leadership position is supposed to know and can be able to differentiate between assault, bullying and harassment? Assault and Harassment are known to have resulted from several serious incidents. In various work places, workers are bullied in long-term jobs by their managers, subordinates, other workers or by a client whereby a good leader is supposed to defend for their workers rights and not allow the right for the customers to no t respect or even abuse the employees. The research also goes on to the short-term jobs like construction or the arts; whereby the supervisors have power over their employees. In both long-term and short-term jobs, the employees have been proved guilty of harassment, bullying others, assault or discriminating. All of us agree that bullying exist in our lives even before going to the workplace (Coder, et al., 2014). As a matter of fact, it started when we were young, we can all remember our high school days whereby we were either bullied or we were bullying. Actually, I was bullied in secondary school and I recall very well getting a punch and losing a tooth. The funny part is that the person tells my friends that he is embarrassed to face me after what he did but I am happy because he admitted he was wrong. The main reason that makes an individual to bully others is to hide his/her weaker side. Another reason for an employee to bully another is avoiding to be responsibly accepting t heir ill character and the consequences. Conclusion. Human beings are altered by supremacy. We know of leaders whose only interest is to consider personal promotions. Leaders have always been like that way. Then we start thinking why few people are corrupted while others are not, or what is concreting the driveways of corrupted men and their females credit cards. In conclusion, I would say that this course has been an enlightening experience. I learnt that good business leadership can enable a team to stay focused in times of emergency. I also learnt that a wide and attractive relation between a boss and his/her employee implies that they are being accepted as important part of the organization and building up a feeling of being an owner among members. Growth of leadership is important since organizations hire leaders of their character. Leadership expansion can take advantage of output and promote synchronization. People must use suitable leadership style to direct teams and individuals. References Bolden, R. (2010). Leadership, Management and Organisational Development . The Pretender Essays - The Pretender, Dream, Jackson Browne

The Pretender "The Pretender" by Jackson Browne tells a story of a man who has dreams of money and love. Pretenders dream of the "American Dream," money, and love, but do not possess these things. The Pretender in the song, typifies the middle-aged American. All want money and love, but few have them. "The Pretender" reveals a message of a man who had strong dreams, only to have them fade into the harsh reality of life. First, the Pretender dreams of possessing legal tender and living the American life. He dreams of living in a good house, and living a stable life. The quotation, "I'm going to rent myself a house in the shade of the freeway I'm going to pack my lunch in the morning and go to work each day And when evening rolls around I'll go on home and lay my body down," states that the man has a desire for a normal life. He wants a steady job, and a comfortable house. The Pretender also yearns for money, as stated "I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for legal tender Where the ads take aim and lay their claim To the heart and soul of the spender And believe in whatever may lie In those things that money can buy Thought true love could have been a contender," and he even thought money could by love. But in the end, the Pretender found out that money can't buy love. Second, the Pretender dreams of love, only to see his dreams fade. The quotation, "Ah the laughter of lovers As they run through the night Leaving nothing for the others But to choose off and fight And tear at the world with all their might While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight," perhaps describes the pretender's dreams. He dreams of love, and to have nothing disturb it, only to have his dream "sail out of sight." Third, the pretender, with all of his dreams, realizes the harsh reality of his life. The quotation, "Out into the cool of the evening Strolls the Pretender He knows that all his hopes and dreams end there," describes how he realizes how, though he has hopes and dreams, he will not likely attain them. Also, he realizes the monotony of his life, caused by a lack of love, as stated in the quotation, "And when the morning light comes in I'll get up and do it again Amen Say it again Amen." Clearly, the Pretender dreams of big things such as money, possessions, and love. Along the way, however, he loses his dreams and realizes how they only go so far. So, "Say a prayer for the Pretender Who started out so young and strong Only to surrender."Amen.

Hippopotamus Facts

Hippopotamus Facts With a broad mouth, a hairless body, and a set of semi-aquatic habits, the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) has always struck humans as vaguely comical creatures. Found only in sub-Saharan Africa, a hippo in the wild can be almost as dangerous (and unpredictable) as a tiger or hyena. Fast Facts: Hippopotamus Scientific Name: Hippopotamus amphibiusCommon Name: Common hippopotamusBasic Animal Group: MammalSize: 11–17 feetWeight: 5500 pounds (female), 6600 pounds (male)Lifespan: 35–50 yearsDiet:  HerbivoreHabitat: Sub-saharan AfricaPopulation: 115,000–130,000Conservation Status: Vulnerable Description Hippos arent the worlds largest land mammals- that honor belongs, by a hair, to the largest breeds of elephants and rhinoceroses- but they come pretty close. The biggest male hippos can approach three tons and 17 feet, and apparently, never stop growing throughout their 50-year life span. The females are a few hundred pounds lighter, but every bit as menacing, especially when defending their young. Hippopotamuses have very little body hair- a trait that puts them in the company of humans, whales, and a handful of other mammals. Hippos have hair only around their mouths and on the tips of their tails. To make up for this deficit, hippos do have extremely thick skin, consisting of about two inches of the epidermis and only a thin layer of underlying fat- theres not much need to conserve heat in the wilds of equatorial Africa. Hippos do, however, have very delicate skin that needs to be protected from the harsh sun. The hippo produces its own natural sunscreen- a substance called blood sweat or red sweat, it consists of red and orange acids that absorb ultraviolet light and inhibit the growth of bacteria. This has led to the widespread myth that hippos sweat blood; in fact, these mammals dont possess any sweat glands at all, which would be superfluous considering their semi-aquatic lifestyle. Many animals, including humans, are sexually dimorphic- the males tend to be larger than the females (or vice-versa), and there are other ways, besides directly examining the genitals, to distinguish between the two sexes. A male hippo, though, looks pretty much exactly like a female hippo, except that males are 10 percent heavier than females. The inability to easily tell whether a particular animal is male or female makes it difficult for researchers in the field to investigate the social life of a lounging herd of hippos. Wikimedia Commons Species While there is only one hippopotamus species- Hippopotamus amphibius- researchers recognize five different subspecies, corresponding to the parts of Africa where these mammals live. H. amphibius amphibius, also known as the Nile hippopotamus or the great northern hippopotamus, lives in Mozambique and Tanzania;H. amphibius kiboko, the East African hippopotamus, lives in Kenya and Somalia;H. amphibius capensis, the South African hippo or the Cape hippo, extends from Zambia to South Africa;H. amphibius tchadensis, the West African or Chad hippo, lives in (you guessed it) western Africa and Chad; and the Angola hippopotamus; andH. amphibius constrictus, the Angola hippo, is restricted to Angola, Congo, and Namibia. The name hippopotamus derives from Greek- a combination of hippo, meaning horse, and potamus, meaning river. Of course, this mammal coexisted with human populations of Africa for thousands of years before the Greeks ever laid eyes on it, and is known by various extant tribes as the mvuvu, kiboko, timondo, and dozens of other local variants. There is no right or wrong way to pluralize hippopotamus: some people prefer hippopotamuses, others like hippopotami, but you should always say hippos rather than hippi. Groups of hippopotamuses (or hippopotami) are called herds, dales, pods, or bloats. Habitat and Range Hippos spend most of each day in shallow water, emerging at night to travel to hippo lawns, grassy areas where they graze. Grazing only at night allows them to keep their skins moist and out of the African sun. When theyre not grazing on grass- which at night takes them into the African lowlands several miles away from the water and for periods of five or six hours at a stretch- hippos prefer to spend their time fully or partially submerged in freshwater lakes and rivers, and occasionally even in saltwater estuaries. Even at night, some hippos remain in the water, in essence taking turns at the hippo lawns. Diet Hippos eat between 65–100 pounds of grass and foliage each night. Somewhat confusingly, hippos are classified as pseudoruminants- theyre equipped with multiple-chambered stomachs, like cows, but they do not chew a cud (which, considering the huge size of their jaws, would make for a pretty comical sight). Fermentation takes place primarily in their fore-stomachs. A hippo has an enormous mouth and it can open up to a whopping 150-degree angle. Their diets certainly have something to do with it- a two-ton mammal has to eat a lot of food to sustain its metabolism. But sexual selection also plays a major role: Opening ones mouth very widely is a good way to impress females (and deter competing males) during mating season, the same reason that males are equipped with such enormous incisors, which otherwise would make no sense given their vegetarian menus. Hippos dont use their incisors to eat; they pluck plant parts with their lips and chew on them with their molars. A hippo can chomp down on branches and leaves with a force of about 2,000 pounds per square inch, enough to cleave a luckless tourist in half (which occasionally happens during unsupervised safaris). By way of comparison, a healthy human male has a bite force of about 200 PSI, and a full-grown saltwater crocodile tilts the dials at 4,000 PSI. Behavior If you ignore the difference in size, hippopotamuses may be the closest thing to amphibians in the mammal kingdom.  In the water, hippos live in loose polygynous groups made up mostly of females with their offspring, one territorial male and several unallied bachelors: The alpha male has a section of beach or lake edge for a territory. Hippopotamuses have sex in the water- the natural buoyancy helps to protect the females from the suffocating weight of the males- fight in the water, and even give birth in the water. Amazingly, a hippo can even sleep underwater, as its autonomic nervous system prompts it to float to the surface every few minutes and take a gulp of air. The main problem with a semi-aquatic African habitat, of course, is that hippos have to share their homes with crocodiles, which occasionally pick off smaller newborns unable to defend themselves. Although male hippos do have territories, and they squabble a bit, that is usually restricted to roaring vocalizations and ritual. The only real battles are when a bachelor male challenges a territorial male for rights over his patch and harem. Reproduction and Offspring Hippopotamuses are polygynous: One bull mates with multiple cows in his territorial/social group. Hippo females usually mate once every two years, and the bull mates with whichever cows are in heat. Although mating can occur throughout the year, conception only occurs from February to August. The gestation period lasts nearly a year, with births taking place between October and April. Hippos only give birth to one calf at a time; calves weigh 50–120 pounds at birth and are adapted to underwater nursing.   Juvenile hippos stay with their mothers and are reliant on mothers milk for nearly a year (324 days). Female juveniles remain in their mothers group, while males leave after they are sexually mature, about three and a half years. WILLIAM WEST/Getty Images  Ã‚   Evolutionary History Unlike the case with rhinoceroses and elephants, the evolutionary tree of hippopotamuses is rooted in mystery. Modern hippos shared a last common ancestor, or concestor, with modern whales, and this presumed species lived in Eurasia about 60 million years ago, only five million years after the dinosaurs had gone extinct. Still, there are tens of millions of years bearing little or no fossil evidence, spanning most of the Cenozoic Era, until the first identifiable hippopotamids like Anthracotherium and Kenyapotamus appear on the scene. The branch leading to the modern genus of hippopotamus split off from the branch leading to the pygmy hippopotamus (genus Choeropsis) less than 10 million years ago. The pygmy hippopotamus of western Africa weighs less than 500 pounds but otherwise looks uncannily like a full-sized hippo. Conservation Status The Internal Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that there are 115,000–130,000 hippos in central and southern Africa, a sharp drop from their census numbers in prehistoric times; they classify hippos as vulnerable, experiencing a continuing decline in area, extent, and quality of habitat. Threats Hippopotamuses live exclusively in sub-Saharan Africa (though they once had a more widespread distribution). Their numbers have declined most precipitously in the Congo in central Africa, where poachers and hungry soldiers have left only about 1,000 hippos standing out of a previous population of almost 30,000. Unlike elephants, which are valued for their ivory, hippos dont have much to offer traders, with the exception of their enormous teeth- which are sometimes sold as ivory substitutes. Another direct threat to the hippopotamus is the loss of habitat. Hippos need water, at least mudholes, all year round to take care of their skin; but they also need grazing lands, and those patches are in danger of disappearing as a result of climate-change-driven desertification. Busnisse Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Busnisse Law - Essay Example One of the Airport’s regulations forbids any gathering more than 200 people in the common areas. East Virginia’s reason for this regulation is to avoid congestion and promote the smooth operation of the Airport. The Washington supporters requested permission to hold their welcome-home gathering in the Airport, but the Airport Controller denied this request, citing the regulation against gatherings. The Washington supporters want to file a lawsuit to obtain access to the Airport gate to welcome-home gathering. Fully discuss the grounds the Washington supporters could assert in this lawsuit and evaluate the Washington supporters’ chances for success. The supporters of presidential candidate George Washington could claim that their First Amendment rights are being impeded upon by not allowing them into the airport to welcome Washington home. Also, they could claim that for an airport that size, a crowd of 500 people is not that significant. There are probably more people who take off or arrive at any given moment than there would be Washington supporters. Finally, Mt. Vernon International Airport contains four concourses and many gates. The political gathering would only require a small section of the airport to be cordoned off for the event. Washington is only going to give a 15-minute speech, and then the crowd would likely disperse. Despite all these claims, the Washington supporters’ chances for success are not that high because of the Airport’s regulations that forbid any gathering of more than 200 people in the common areas. The airport is not considered a public place because it is owned by the State of East Virginia Department of

Performance Reviews (Human Resource Management) Essay

Performance Reviews (Human Resource Management) - Essay Example She at one point disputed some of my achievements on the basis that she did not believe I was capable of that since my background was miserable. However, much I tried to display my competence during the review, the supervisor was not impressed. I realized that her motive was to instil the anger in me and evoke a negative response so as she could get a chance to get me down. I tried to play calm all through the review, answering only the questions that were not personal. However, I was utterly discouraged when she indicated on my report that I was uncooperative in the review. Although I forwarded my grievances to the superiors in the organization and was given a consideration, I still feel offended by the actions of the supervisor and it is my feeling that such people should not be allowed to conduct reviews. Moreover, even with shortages of staff performance reviews should not be based on a single person review as this increases the risk of

Religious Ethic Essay Example for Free

Religious Ethic Essay Discuss the view that only a religious ethic can provide an acceptable basis for medical ethics. Medical ethics concerns many areas of ethical debate. Including such controversial issues such as euthanasia, abortion and human cloning, medical ethics sparks lively debates. The issue of abortion is a very relevant and controversial issue. There are opposition and supporters from both a religious ethical background and a non-religious ethical background. Those who come from a Christian ethical background tend to have a similar argument, that of the sanctity of life. Roman Catholics oppose abortion using the Christian ethical theory of Natural Law. Abortion would be going against natural law as it interferes with Gods will. Abortion is right in no circumstances, in other words it is intrinsically evil, as it involves the murder of an innocent life. Protestants do, in principle, oppose abortion on the ground that murder is wrong, as stated in the bible; Thou shalt not kill (Exodus) and as abortion is in effect murder, abortion must therefore also be wrong. However, some more liberal protestants allow abortion in certain circumstances, such as before the nervous system has developed (before the foetus can feel) if the mothers life or health is threatened or if the pregnancy is from an exceptional situation, such as the result of rape. There seems to be no reason however, as to why these two standpoints could not be from a non-religious ethic. The appreciation of life is not something that is exclusive to religion, and therefore the view that abortion is murder could stand with anyone who believes that the foetus is a person, and this need not be a religious standpoint. Equally the Liberal protestant view could again apply to anyone who believes that murder is wrong, yet as circumstances differ, the things to be considered also differ. This is a relativist situationist standpoint but again does not have to be religious. In fact many non-religious people do tend to be situationists as they judge decisions on their consequences and not on the action itself, as no action is considered intrinsically wrong, as it is not deemed by any higher being or book, as it is in religion. These arguments also apply in relation to euthanasia. Roman Catholics view murder as wrong and as euthanasia is essentially murder, it must also be wrong. It would also be considered as going against Natural Law as it interferes with Gods will, just as abortion does. Protestants would claim that the bible condemns euthanasia as it is murder, yet come more liberal Protestants again claim that all factors should be considered in order to make a decision relative to that persons individual situation. Many people would argue however that without a religious ethic there are no clear rules and boundaries. Deontological ethical theories, that are absolutist theories that apply in all situations, provide these boundaries as the answer will always be the same. Yet not all religious ethical theories are deontological, such as Fletchers Situation ethics, which is teleological. This means that religious ethics do not always provide a clear cut answer, just as non-religious ethics may not. Many religious fundamentalists would argue that atheists, for example, cannot have a similar appreciation of life as they do. Atheists do not believe in God, and some would argue that as they do not believe in anything, they cannot have the same appreciation of life. Yet it appears that without a belief in anything religious, life becomes even more precious. Without the promise of an afterlife, which is provided by Christianity, this current life becomes even more precious and amazing. As you only get one shot at life from an atheist perspective, the feeling to preserve it as much as possible, along with do the same for others would seem to be even stronger. Without the excuse that the person/foetus will go to Heaven, murder seems to be even more wrong, as it would take away the one life that that person has been offered. In conclusion I think that a religious ethic is by no means the only acceptable basis for medical ethics. Although some Christian ethics will provide a stable answer for every situation, an answer that will never change and therefore will have clear-cut boundaries, not every person in the world will ever be of the same religion, and therefore it cannot be universal. Therefore a non-religious ethic which everyone could agree on seems more acceptable, such as one that allows situations to be considered, because therefore a religious ethic could be used in certain circumstances if the people involved would like to do so, as that happens to be their own situation; similarly if someone does not want to apply a religious ethical theory then they are not obliged to do so, because again this option would apply to their situation. Therefore situationist ethics that are not based on religion can be made universal, allowing religious ethics to be applied or not according to the wishes of the people involved and this seems to me to be the only acceptable basis for medical ethics, an ethic that will allow for everyones personal beliefs.

the last of the mohicans Essay -- essays research papers

The Last Of the Mohicans The film is set in 1757, the third year of war between England and France for the possession of the continent. The center of the story is the most notorious event of the French and Indian War; the so-called 'massacre' of British troops, women and children by General Montcalm's Indian allies after the British surrender of Fort William Henry to the French on 9th August 1757. The Struggle between the French and English for control of North America became apparent in the late 1600s. The buffer between the two imperial powers was the presence of the five Nations of Iroquois who controlled almost all of what is now New York State. From West to East the tribes were the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and the Mohawk; these five were joined by the Tuscarora to form six Nations in 1711. The film correctly portrays the Iroquois as ferocious warriors who practiced torture and covered their skins with bear grease and red ochre. The gathering of Indians in the temporary military camps of 1757 leads to a misrepresentation of the daily lives of northeastern Indian tribes. The Iroquois, the Delaware, nor the Huron were nomadic hunter-warriors who only lived for battle. Iroquois tribes were fundamentally agricultural, and due to being inland people were less dependent upon British and French fur traders than were the Algonquin tribes. English settlement West and North from Albany and French from the West and South from Montreal made it hard for the Iroquois to pre...

Health Care Financial Accounting Essay

Financial management is a very complex process across the business organizations. The increasing competition, complexity of business, rising expectations of investors etc can lure any organization to use unethical financial management tactics to make their books look better. But this can be extremely chaotic In future. Healthcare organizations are especially prone to such practices because of the extreme financial pressure and critical nature of business operations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different aspects of the financial management, generally accepted accounting principles and the suggested ethical practices in this regard. Financial management is not merely a record of debits and credits. It is a measure of the health of an organization. The four elements of financial management consist of: planning, control, organizing and directing, decision making. The business operations must be planned and the management must be well aware of all the business aspects. The management needs to follow a systematic process to make ethical decisions in sync with the goals of the organization. It must be ensured that sufficient fund is available to perform business operations in time. The management must have the control of business operations and thus the financial activities. The management needs to ensure that each part of the organization is adhering to the goals established for it. The management needs to decide how effectively the resources can be used to achieve the goals. This helps in maintaining the financial health of the organization. There is always a possibility of a financial situation in an organization when a difficult decision is to be taken. Such circumstances require prompt decision making capability along with the understanding of the consequences of the decisions. In addition to the complexity of financial management, there are general accepted accounting principles. The general accepted accounting principles also referred to as (GAAP). Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are not any written rules. They are just the recommended accounting practices to maintain accurate, fair and consistent financial reporting. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have worked together to come out with GAAP. They revise the recommendations as and when required (Investopedia, n. d). Though every nation is free to adhere to any accounting system but GAAP is internationally followed to allow the interaction of organizations and their financial reports at international level. Ethics in financial management is very essential in all types of organization but it is even more important in health care organizations. A primary reason is that patients and their families are vulnerable to unethical practices. They deserve honesty in the financial aspects. The boards, executives, clinicians and the staff are equally responsible in this process. Another reason is that the health care organizations bear extreme financial pressure and it becomes very difficult for the finance department to strike a balance between the facilities and expenses. If the financial health of the organization declines, it sets up a negative spiral of loss of business. There have been several incidents of unethical financial management practices because of the increasing complexity of business operations. Therefore, several examples of ethical practice and conduct are suggested to avoid any unfair and dishonest incident. There are several financial circumstances that challenge the management to take right decision in a speedy manner. There may be quick unethical measures available that may settle the problem temporarily. But the management must not follow such measures as they may prove chaotic in longer run. They must take the ethical financial decisions. In a 2004 news articles that discusses compromising situation.. This articles states, â€Å"The financial pressures experienced by most healthcare organizations are intense. Not surprisingly, financial statements receive frequent and persistent scrutiny. Declining financial performance makes the organization and its management team look bad. If financial covenants aren’t met, a hospital’s bond rating may be down-graded, resulting in reduced access to low-cost capital and other serious financial ramifications. For whatever reason, the board, management team, and external constituencies may want to â€Å"make the numbers look better. † The heat is on the CFO to â€Å"do the books differently† (Tyler, 2004). In this example, the CFO is responsible to be honest. Manipulating the books the make the number look better would unethical. However, the CFO must make ethical financial decisions. Another example of good ethics is a business leader’s sincerity. A business organization can have positive as well as negative circumstances. It is very easy to rejoice the positive results but the otherwise is tough. The leaders must be sincere enough to shoulder the responsibility of the negative incidents. They should also be capable of setting high standards of financial ethics in their organizations. It affects the hierarchy and thus the overall ethical health of the organization is positively influenced. For example, â€Å"the Healthcare Group Purchasing Industry Initiative (HGPII), an organization dedicated to promoting the highest ethical standards and practices for the healthcare group purchasing industry, announced steps that will allow for even more transparency. They are activating a formal process to ensure prompt and fair resolution of supplier complaints regarding a group purchasing organization’s (GPO) purchasing process; and they are implementing an Independent Advisory Council to have outside observers make sure they are doing everything possible in terms of ethical standard† (Freeman, 2010). Finally it can be concluded that planning, control, organizing and directing, and decision making constitute the financial management. There are generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) that recommend the best practices to avoid unethical financial reporting. Moreover, there are several examples of ethical conduct for financial aspects. As healthcare organizations are financially very much pressurized and involve a very risky real time business model, they need to be more sincere in financial management.

Highlights of the Dorian Invasion Into Greece

Highlights of the Dorian Invasion Into Greece In about 1100 B.C., a group of men from the North, who spoke Greek invaded the Peloponnese. It is believed that an enemy, Eurystheus of Mycenae, is the leader who invaded The Dorians. The Dorians were considered the people of ancient Greece and received their mythological name from the son of Hellen, Dorus.  Their name also derives from Doris, a small place in the middle of Greece. The origin of the Dorians is not completely certain, though the general belief is that they are from Epirus or Macedonia. According to the ancient Greeks, it is possible there could have been such an invasion. If there was one, it might explain the loss of the Mycenaean civilization. Currently, there is a lack of evidence, despite 200 years worth of research. The Dark Age The end of Mycenaean civilization led to a Dark Age (1200 – 800 B.C.) which we know very little about, apart from archaeology. Specifically, when The Dorians conquered the Minoans and Mycenaean civilizations, The Dark Age emerged. It was the period in which the harder and cheaper metal iron replaced bronze as a material for weapons and farm implements. The Dark Age ended when the Archaic Age began in the 8th century. The Culture of the Dorians The Dorians also brought The Iron Age (1200–1000 B.C.)  with them when the main material to make tools was made out of iron. One of the main materials they created was the iron sword with the intention to slash. It is believed that the Dorians owned land and evolved into aristocrats. This was at the time where monarchy and kings as a form of government were becoming outdated, and land ownership and democracy became a key form of rule. Power and rich architecture were amongst several of the influences from the Dorians. In regions of war, like Sparta, the Dorians made themselves military class and made the original population slaves of agriculture.  In city-states, the Dorians coupled with Greek people for political power and business and also helped influence Greek art, such as through their invention of choral lyrics in the theater. The Descent of the Heracleidae The Dorian Invasion is connected with the return of the sons of Hercules (Heracles), who are known as the Heracleidae.  According to the Heracleidae, the Dorian land was under the ownership of Heracles. This allowed the Herakleids and Dorians to become socially intertwined. While some refer to the events prior to classical Greece as the Dorian Invasion, others have understood it as the Descent of the Heraclidae. There were several tribes amongst The Dorians which included Hylleis,  Pamphyloi, and Dymanes. The legend is that when the Dorians were pushed out of their homeland, the sons of Hercules  eventually inspired the Dorians to battle their enemies in order to take back control of the Peloponnese. The people of Athens were not forced to migrate during this unsettled period, which put them in a unique position among the Greeks.

Criteria for Selection of Physical Education Teachers Essay

Criteria for Selection of Physical Education Teachers - Essay Example As the report declares three different kinds of questionnaires were prepared. The first was a Likert-type questionnaire. Responses were assigned numerical values that assessed how important the respondent considered a particular attribute. The second questionnaire required the respondents to arrange the attributes they considered favorable in potential teacher candidates in order of rank and importance. The third was an open ended questionnaire that allowed the respondents to answer questions in more detail, which provided some insight into the reasons for their choices. This paper stresses that the ability to teach physical education was considered most important, followed closely by the ability to teach inter personal skills. Teaching of swimming, dancing and outdoor education ranked lowest on the scale. The most important criterion was a major in physical education, followed by graduation from a reputable institution and a grade point average of at least 3. The least important criterion was the possession of a Master’s degree. The ability to motivate and inspire students ranked as the most important quality in terms of teaching skills. Adopting a wide range of teaching styles and maintaining a good classroom plan were also considered very important. The least important factor was collaboration with parents and the Community. Enthusiasm and passion ranked highest on the list of favorable attributes, followed by the ability to speak well. The least important factor was whether or not the candidate led an active lifestyle.
